A bit of
history...
A short history of
wallpaper
 |
Since prehistory, men disliked exposed and
undecorated walls and thought it was important to adorn
the inside of their homes.
In all civilizations, the upper classes used to
decorate the walls of their houses with drapes,
frescoes, wooden, leather and stucco
coatings.
During the medieval period, tapestries, hand-woven
carpets characterised by pictorial designs, were brought
to Europe by Arabs. They were successful and in few
years tapestries were decorating all European courts. In
a certain way, they are the most direct forerunners of
wallpapers. |
| During the Middle Ages, paper, silk and spices
were imported from China. The paper itself, is a Chinese
invention althought was a western idea to paint paper panels for
decorating the house walls.
Until the diffusion of industrial machineries,
material and paper were hand decorated or printed by
well-manufactured (but impractical) artisan rolls. The
decorated sheets where pasted or nailed on the walls.
Finally, at the end of the 17th century, the sheets
started to be pasted together to form a roll and so the
first true wallpaper was created. |
 |
The introduction of paper rolls and the development of the
machinery have revolutionised the production contributing to the
success of the wallpaper that, like clothes, started to follow the
cultural and artistic fashion of its time.
Today
the technical development gives the possibility of choosing among a
very wide range of styles and
collections, and
gives the opportunity of decorating all walls in the most
pleasant way, giving them the right luminosity and
warmth.
