Hanging wallapaper by oneself: that's how to do

Although this short information has not the aim to teach you all that you need, reading this page will make you realize that hanging your wallpaper is a simple, not expensive and even amusing work!

First of all, the suitable tools:

attrezzi.jpg (13686 byte)

Plastic and metal spatulas
Brushes
Right and conical rollers
Bucket
Scissor and cutter
A little plumb-line

Then obviously you need wallpaper! Calculate in a simple way the number of rolls you need to paper your room, using the following table:

circuit of the room

height of the room

from 2,10 m to 2,35 m

from 2,40 m to 3,05 m

from 3,10 m to 4 m

6 m

3 rolls

4 rolls

5 rolls

10 m

5 rolls

7 rolls

9 rolls

12 m

6 rolls

8 rolls

11 rolls

15 m

8 rolls

10 rolls

14 rolls

18 m

9 rolls

12 rolls

17 rolls

20 m

10 rolls

14 rolls

19 rolls

24 m

12 rolls

16 rolls

23 rolls

These calculations are based on the fact that the measures of all the rolls of wallpaper on the market have standard dimensions (fixed by IGI):

width = 0.53 m

length = 10.05 m

So a roll is approximately 10 metres long, and about half a metre wide, on the whole 5 m2. The few centimeters in excess are left to allow a small overlap between the joint of the sheets. It's easy, isn't it?

Include also the spaces where you can't put paper : doors, windows, switches, etc. Put the paper you save aside for the recesses and the few retouchings to complete the work.

Let's start working now!

First of all remove all previous wallcoverings. Clean the wall in an extremely accurate way, in order and to make the surface on which you'll hang the new paper absolutely smooth and regular. This might seem quite long and toilsome, but remember that all surfaces can be made fit to wallpaper!
Choose the correct type of paste according to the weight of the paper (you can find information on the package of the roll!). Then measure the height of the wall.
Cut a strip of paper equivalent to the wall's height, allowing an extra of some centimeters for the final trimming.
Place the wallpaper on the pasting table and brush the paste evenly on the surface. Make sure that the edges are well pasted...
... and let the paste dry for few minutes.
Remember to verify that the lenght of paper you are hanging is perfectly upright: use the plumb line to mark vertical lines on the wall.

Now you can hang the lenght onto the wall. Start from the top and let the strip fall. Smooth the wallpaper down usuing a hanging brush working from the middle towards the edges

Don't leave air bubbles or irregularities: press all the surface of the paper in a regular way, and pay attention to the drying time of the paste.

Using a sponge, remove delicately every eccess of paste from the wallpaper.

Position the next lenght onto the wall beside the first one and slide it into position so that the pattern matches.

Let the paste dry well in order to prevent the paper coming off in the points in which there is the joint between two rolls.

Hanging wallpaper by oneself: that's why it's cheap

Which are the usual objections made to the use of wallpaper? Here they are:

"wallpaper is very expensive... "

"hanging it requires expensive labour..."

"it is not a very handy product..."

"it can not been hanged by oneself..."

Attention! All these statements are false! Why?

In most cases, they are only prejudices about wallcoverings. As a matter of fact, most wallpaper users give this opinion on it:

wallpaper allows an easier maintenance than paint
wallpaper is a mark of elegance and dignity in the living, because it covers and fits
wallpaper guarantees a long term solution, that justifies the slightly greater expense
wallpaper allows an easier and less dirty application than paint
wallpaper is an ecological product: its chemical composition doesn't deliver any kind of injury to human health

Even the most usual objection, the presumed greater cost of wallpaper in comparison to other solutions, is unreliable. Make some simple calculations:

the mere cost of the wallpaper, especially if you choose convenient solutions, is not particularly elevated. Among Domus Parati's products you can find a lot of wallpaper designs, and they can satisfy all demands.
